Tablets and capsules are two of the most common and widely used pharmaceutical dosage forms. They are used to deliver a variety of medications to patients in a convenient and effective manner. Here’s what you need to know about tablets and capsules manufacturing:

Tablets Manufacturing:

  1. Formulation Development: Tablets are solid dosage forms made by compressing or molding a powdered drug into a specific shape and size. The formulation process involves selecting appropriate excipients, binders, disintegrants, and other additives to ensure the tablet’s integrity and dissolution.
  2. Granulation: Granulation is a crucial step where the drug and excipients are mixed and then granulated to form cohesive particles. This helps improve flowability and compression properties of the powder mixture.
  3. Compression: The granulated mixture is then compressed using tablet presses to form tablets of desired shape, size, and hardness. Modern tablet presses can produce thousands of tablets per minute.
  4. Coating: Some tablets have a coating to improve appearance, taste, stability, and ease of swallowing. Coatings can be functional (sustained-release) or aesthetic (colorful and glossy).

Capsules Manufacturing:

  1. Capsule Types: Capsules come in two main types: hard gelatin capsules (HGC) and soft gelatin capsules (SGC). HGC are made from two gelatin shells that fit together, while SGC have a single, flexible gelatin shell filled with liquid or semi-solid ingredients.
  2. Formulation: Similar to tablets, capsule formulations require careful selection of excipients, fillers, binders, and active ingredients. For SGC, the active ingredient is often dissolved or suspended in a suitable liquid.
  3. Filling: Capsules are filled with the formulated mixture using specialized machines. HGC are filled with powders, granules, or pellets, while SGC are filled with liquids or semi-solids.
  4. Sealing: HGC are sealed by pressing the two halves together with the powder inside. SGC are sealed by heat-sealing the gelatin shell after filling.

Both tablets and capsules manufacturing processes are subject to strict quality control, including checks for weight variation, content uniformity, dissolution, and stability. Modern manufacturing facilities use advanced equipment and technologies to ensure consistent product quality, adherence to regulatory standards, and efficient production.

It’s important to note that the choice between tablets and capsules depends on factors such as the drug’s properties, patient preferences, therapeutic needs, and marketing considerations. Manufacturers like Taj Pharma follow these practices to produce high-quality tablets and capsules for various healthcare needs.
